Wooden stairs. Various solutions

Wooden stairsWooden stairs are rather expensive, but they have some undoubtful advantages which allow setting one’s choice particularly on wooden stairs: ecological compatibility, naturalness, orhamentality etc. Wooden stairs as well as other stairs can be of different construction: stairways, revolving, circular. Despite such variety, choice is usually set on wooden stairs of usual shape.

Wooden stairs. Constructive peculiarities: landings and flights

Wooden stairsWooden stairs in two-storey building consist of one or several landings and flights.

Landings can be of level-type, equipped at the level of the floor of each storey, and intermediate, arranged between storeys.

Flight of stairs is an uninterrupted raw of steps. If flight of stairs contains over 10 steps, movement by stairs becomes inconvenient. That is why flights are divided into two or more parts and are separated from each other by stair landings. Therefore, stairs can be one-flight and two-flight depending on constructive solution and layout of apartment.

Flights of stairs are arranged by different methods depending on layout of premises. In case if flights are arranged along the straight line, stairs are called straight. But straight stairs do not allow saving of area, and they are often very dangerous due to the steep descent. To avoid these shortcomings, flights are made revolving.

To save some space flights are also replaced by turn treads sometimes. Turn treads are steps in which normal width is observed in the middle part only. Internal edge of steps is narrower, and external edge of steps is wider. Stairs consisting of turn treads only are called circular stairs.

Wooden stairs. Constructive peculiarities: enclosure

Wooden stairsAppearance of stairs to the large extent is determined by enclosures – rails which shall be not only durable, but also architecturally expressive. Rail enclosure consists of upper and lower rail posts, and rail supports of different shape. From the top enclosure ends with handrail directed along stair flight.

Stair rails can be made of supports with rectangular, square or round section.

Rail posts are often decorated by fretworks adding unique individuality to them.

The last rail posts are usually fixed in slots of floor beams, and intermediate rail posts – in slots of string-board and handrail.
