Cases of people’s injuries connected with using of stairs occur more often than at other constructive elements of the building. Therefore, construction of good stairs meeting requirements of modern aesthetic norms reduces hazard connected with its use to minimum.

Movement by stairs is connected with certain level of inconvenience and increased physical exercises, which is especially important for aged people and disabled. Many generations of builders and architects from different countries of the world have worked on the solution of these tasks.

Basic requirements to construction of stairs and place of their location

  • provision of safe, rather quick movement from one level to another;
  • conformity with architecture of building and interior of premises where stairs are mounted;
  • location in the right place where stairs will not create any inconveniences;
  • adequacy of construction and properties of material it is made of;
  • approach to the flight of stairs shall be free, so do not mount stairs in such a way that there are any constructive elements of the building or items of furniture in this gap;
  • the width of flights of stairs shall provide two-way movement;
  • the width of stair steps shall be enough for standing on them with full foot.
  • the height between steps shall not exceed 17-19 cm;
  • each stairs shall be well-illuminated along the full length;
  • the distance between the step and the ceiling or beam shall be no less than 2 m;
  • flights of stairs with the number of steps more than three shall be equipped with rails;
  • stairs shall carry no less than 180-220 kg, and stair rails – no less than 100 kg;
  • all steps within one flight shall be of the same size in height and width.

In actual conditions when stairs are made for particular family, sometimes deviations from these requirements are allowed. But in any case safety characteristics in construction of any stairs shall prevail.
